Terry Storch is one of the most involved, plugged-in local cyclists I know, so I asked him to give us some insight on what’s going on with the City of Edmond’s cycling initiatives. Thanks for keeping us informed, Terry!
The City of Edmond has been growing and developing nicely since my wife and I moved here nearly 6 years ago. We moved here from the Dallas area, and instantly we missed some of the amenities that Dallas offered. One key item was the outdoor activities we grew accustomed to. However, as time passed Edmond added some great new restaurants, added new grocery store options and now is showing some great promise for the outdoor activities we have been missing.
A few days ago Ryan drew your attention to the Bicycle Master Plan open house. At the open house the city staff and the hired consultants went over the plan and shared the vision behind the master plan. Simply put, we believe plan would support economic development, improved transportation, promote health and wellness, environmental support, and provide for a better community.
This plan is a big vision and will not happen overnight. We anticipate the full Master Plan could take up to 10 or more years to complete, but the city is taking steps now towards the end goal. You can see the full draft of the plan here, but let me give you a few of the highlights.
- 101 miles of proposed bicycle network
- access to parks, schools and shopping
- access to existing trails and networks
- access to transit
- Additional signage and bike lanes
- Improved bike parking
The City of Edmond continues to grow and expand…but most important to me is that it continues to prove to be a wonderful place to live and raise a family. The Bicycle Master plan is an wonderful addition to the city, and will be another great reason to move to Edmond and call it home!
